WETLAND MITIGATION DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION OVERSIGHT & MONITORING - WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, MI
Obligations to mitigate wetland losses at numerous road and bridge project locations caused the Road Commission of Macomb County to seek a single site large enough to encompass all mitigation requirements. A former sand and gravel quarry near Stony Creek was found to meet their needs.
The Road Commission retained ASTI to develop a conceptual plan for the project. ASTI worked closely with Road Commission staff, reviewing groundwater elevations and site topography to develop a concept plan for 19 acres of constructed wetland. ASTI completed detailed plans and specifications for the project, according to Michigan Department of Transportation requirements.
Construction was completed in December 2003. ASTI ecologists oversaw the year-long construction to assure conformance with plans. ASTI has since conducted annual monitoring to track the progress of wetland establishment and development and will continue monitoring the wetland for a total of 10 years.
